 Professional Development

Present TeacherTM is an innovative and inspiring, research-based professional learning program that draws on best practice in mindfulness, neuroscience, adult social and emotional theory, and teacher transformation theory to cultivate core capacities of educator mental, emotional, and heart/soul health using the stress of the profession as the experiential fuel to "burn in" to one's calling to teach.

OUR MISSION

Provide teachers with strategies, practices, and experiences rooted in mindfulness to deepen self-awareness, equity consciousness, and compassion for self and others so to learn how to adapt to the stressors of a heart-centered profession in a healthy way.

Strategically cultivate habits of mind and dispositions to remain calm in chaotic teaching moments, see student behavior through the lens of curiosity and compassion, and see the self as capable and confident through the many challenges of teaching.

Engage teachers in exploring the origins of teacher well-being while learning a research-base process to productively "process problems" in that commonly arise in teaching so that teachers can actualize their innate calm, resilience, and emotional agility to stage off burnout and realize happiness, joy, passion, and purpose in their teaching practice.

OUR WHY

The Cost of Teacher Burnout

The data on the cost and impact of teacher burnout is shocking (and probably not surprising).

With over 50% of new teachers fleeing the profession within the first 5 years, right before they get really, really good, the profession of teaching is atrophying. We have a teacher retention and a teacher recruitment problem that is costing approximately $7.3 billion dollars per year.

Energized Teachers ~ Elevated Teaching

Research confirms that students thrive emotionally, intellectually, and socially in learning environments that are positive, joyful, and happy! As a teacher, we need to know how to strategically cultivate our inner joy, enthusiasm, and passion right in the middle of the stress so that we can create cultures of learning that inspire our students...

A calm and quiet mind is a teacher's greatest pedagogical super-power and well-being asset. Teachers who know how to de-escalate their stress response during moments of stress protect their psychological and physiological well-being, and they maintain a clean and clear perspective of the moment so they keep the learning environment stable and centered....

Teacher burnout not only has high financial costs for districts, there is an exceedingly high relational, emotional, human capital, and learning cost. Research confirms that teachers can learn practical strategies to metabolize the stress inherent in the teaching profession as fuel to "burn in" to teaching, and more importantly, use the stress as an invitation to gain greater equity consciousness, self-awareness, and compassion...

The Spirit of a Resilient Teacher

No More Moral Injury

The 4 "Musts" of Teacher Mental Health

The Burnout Antidote ~ Burning IN to Teaching

Research confirms that one of the most insidious forms of teacher burnout out is moral injury. When teachers feel that their values, passions, and natural talents are not able to be expressed in their teaching, they can quickly experience a soul or "psychic wound" that damages their sense of connection to their students, their very selves, and their calling to teach...

The Brain of a Resilient Teacher

Teachers who are resilient to the stressors of the profession have unique brain structures. Their resilient habits of mind are "hard-wired" through practice in the moments of uncertainty, chaos, and stress. Every teacher can learn neuroscience-based practices that "shrink" the fight-flight fear response and "thicken" the prefrontal cortex to increase insightful decision making and self-regulation of emotions and thoughts during high-stress teaching moments...
